“Welcome to another season of superb chamber music performed by artists of the NBSO. This year baritone Philip Lima joins us for an adventurous vocal program; clarinetist Nicholas Brown interprets trios of Brahms and Khachaturian; and maestro Yaniv Dinur lends his virtuosity to the Brahms Piano Quintet. Throughout the season, masterworks traversing three centuries disport with an eclectic array of works that lift the spirit while pleasing the senses and teasing the intellect. Lustrous baritone Philip Lima joins NBSO core musicians in an eclectic potpourri ranging from Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Songs of Travel and Samuel Barber’s Dover Beach to the earthy songs of Charles Ives and three spirituals. A piano quartet by Portuguese master Joly Braga Santos and The Toreador’s Prayer by Joaquín Turina offer interludes of instrumental poetry and brilliance.

Three powerful trios prove that less can be so much more. NBSO clarinetist Nicholas Brown lends his artistry to Aram Khachaturian’s incisive Trio of 1932 and Brahms’s late, sublime Clarinet Trio, Op. 114. The 1987 Piano Trio by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, much praised for its clarity, wit, and semblance to a bolt of lightning, reinforces her reputation as one of the finest composers of her generation. Let’s cube it!

Yaniv Dinur joins his NBSO colleagues for a performance of Brahms’s colossal Piano Quintet, one of the cornerstones of the chamber repertoire. A charming Trio by Philipp Scharwenka and Bohuslav Martinů’s riveting Duo No. 1 for Violin and Cello round out a program ablaze with heavenly inspiration.

Victoria Bond’s Dancing on Glass evokes the unique musical language that has garnered accolades for this American composer and conductor. Scion for solo cello reveals Betsy Jolas, doyenne of Franco-American sophistication, still at the top of her game at age 97. Moritz Moszkowski’s Suite for Two Violins and Piano offers turn-of-the-century fireworks and we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Maurice Ravel’s birth with his ravishing String Quartet.

A program of startling intensity opens with Quincy Porter’s Suite for Viola Alone. The neo-romantic Bohemian Vítězslav Novák tugs the heartstrings with his haunting String Quartet, composed after a summer in the forests of Wallachia. Our season ends with Gabriel Fauré’s scintillating Second Piano Quintet, a masterpiece of shadow and light.

The South Coast Chamber Music Series (SCCMS) was formed to present superior chamber music for the communities of Southeastern Massachusetts. SCCMS held its first subscription series concert on October 20, 2001. Since then, we have performed composers from Bach, Brahms, and Ravel to present-day masters Takemitsu and Piston. Each program presents an engaging array of styles, timbres, and artists in lively acoustic environments in Marion and South Dartmouth. We joined forces with the NBSO in 2014, giving both organizations an opportunity to expand in all directions—more concerts, more musicians, and more music—and are thrilled to connect with our loyal and growing audience.
