Four iconic composers open our season with festive works showcasing the diversity and depth of American music. The NBSO’s brilliant new concertmaster Emma Powell kicks off (literally!) the festivities with John Corigliano’s sassy STOMP for solo violin. Remember PDQ Bach? None other than Peter Schickele, whose quartet “American Dreams” invokes melodies that brought the nation together. Missy Mazzoli’s electric Lies You Can Believe In depicts the frenetic energy of a burgeoning metropolis while the super romantic piano quintet of Boston’s staid grande dame Amy Beach transports the listener to a realm of emotion remarkable – and still bold – in its sensual intensity.

Charles Ives’s playfully frightful Hallowe’en sets the stage for a program of startling surprise. Composed in the aftermath of the second World War, Shostakovich’s wildly original third string quartet opens on a cheeky note. Ensuing movements describe a ghostly waltz before fierce “gunshots” introduce a musical battle; we hear an eloquent elegy for the war’s lost souls before a spooky cello solo recalls previous themes in a haunting finale. And who was Johanna Senfter, a cipher in the annals of musicology? Max Reger, the esteemed German pedagogue, considered her his finest pupil. Despite her prodigious output, Senfter’s self-imposed hermitry kept her name and works hidden from the world. Her spellbinding piano quartet reveals an imagination and intellect equal to those of her celebrated contemporaries. May she rise again!

An all-Beethoven program commemorating the 200th anniversary of his death

This program spotlights three gems from the immense and precious treasury Beethoven left to posterity. An early, sparkling violin and piano sonata, dedicated to Antonio Salieri, twines lyricism and humor in delightful dialogue. A late cello and piano sonata breaks new ground in structure and virtuosity while maintaining a preternatural simplicity. Beethoven’s visionary Op. 130 quartet, a work that has mesmerized players, composers, poets, and listeners for two hundred years, closes the program on a note of transcendent awe and appreciation for this genius unique in history.

Five members of the NBSO woodwind section present a scintillating program ranging from Mozart’s urbane Quintet for Piano and Winds to a ravishing reimagining of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. Quintet and piano join forces for Poulenc’s jazzy Sextet, a jewel of Parisian wit, elegance, virtuosity, and – inevitably – melancholy. The perfect prelude to long-awaited spring!

The sudden death of Fanny Mendelssohn, Felix’s beloved sister, was a blow from which he never recovered. Before his own demise six months later, Mendelssohn’s wild sorrow found voice in his final string quartet, a testament to love and loss that, strangely enough, consoles us all. In almost total contrast to Mendelssohn’s despair, Dvorak’s quintet is a magical universe full of joy and life. Limestone and Felt, Caroline Shaw’s enigmatic duo for viola and cello, opens the program with hard and soft acoustics, each presenting a way to process our pasts and step bravely into the future.

The South Coast Chamber Music Series (SCCMS) was formed to present superior chamber music for the communities of Southeastern Massachusetts. SCCMS held its first subscription series concert on October 20, 2001. Since then, we have performed composers from Bach, Brahms, and Ravel to present-day masters Takemitsu and Piston. Each program presents an engaging array of styles, timbres, and artists in lively acoustic environments in Marion and South Dartmouth. We joined forces with the NBSO in 2014, giving both organizations an opportunity to expand in all directions—more concerts, more musicians, and more music—and are thrilled to connect with our loyal and growing audience.

A piano quartet by Portuguese master Joly Braga Santos and The Toreador’s Prayer by Joaquín Turina offer interludes of instrumental poetry and brilliance.
