Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet, Overture-Fantasy

Dmitri Shostakovich: Violin Concerto No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 77

Hector Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique, Op. 14

Yaniv Dinur, Conductor
Karen Gomyo, Violin

Internationally acclaimed violinist Karen Gomyo plays Shostakovich’s electrifying Violin Concerto – a subversive piece that the composer had to hide from the Soviet authorities. Shostakovich is paired with his most romantic compatriot, Tchaikovsky, and one of the most beloved pieces in the repertoire: Romeo and Juliet. In the second half, the NBSO performs Berlioz’s groundbreaking piece Symphonie Fantastique with an extended orchestra, ringing bells, backstage playing, and other special effects, bringing to life the composer’s personal love story and dark fantasies.
