TAKE FIVE

November 23 & 24, 2019
Two enormous piano quintets probe the boundaries of Romantic.

The remarkable Mrs. H. H. A. Beach was not only a virtuoso pianist (performing dozens of times with the Boston Symphony), but a prolific composer of symphonic, chamber, piano, and vocal works. Her Piano Quintet of 1907, unabashedly romantic, demonstrates why she became the most successful woman composer of her generation. And Brahms’s passionate Quintet proves men can be romantics, too!

BEETHOVEN CCL

January 25 & 26, 2020

2020 marks Beethoven’s 250th Birthday – come celebrate!

We celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday year with a performance of his Second Symphony – for piano trio! With the G Major violin and piano sonata of 1803, dedicated to Tsar Alexander I, Beethoven honors the traditions of Mozart and Haydn while gently “rocking the boat.” His dramatic, theatrical C Minor Quartet, Op. 18, No 4, closes the program with a kaleidoscope of emotions that makes Beethoven truly immortal – and forever beloved.

Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Trio No. 12, based on Symphony No. 2
Violin Sonata in G Major, Op. 30, No. 3
String Quartet in C Minor, Op. 18, No. 4

THREE’S A CROWD

March 28 & 29, 2020
Two Baroque solos preface a staggering demonstration of trio power.

Bach’s violin Chaconne and the C major cello suite demonstrate the awesome power of four strings in the right hands. The program segues into two stunning force multipliers: Mendelssohn’s scintillating Trio in C Minor and Café Music by Paul Schoenfield, a work fusing ragtime, jazz, and klezmer into a literally unforgettable tour de force.

Johann Sebastian Bach Cello Suite
Johann Sebastian Bach Chaconne, from Violin Partita No. 2 in D Minor
Paul Schoenfield Café Music
Felix Mendelssohn Piano Trio No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 66

HOPSCOTCH

May 16 & 17, 2020
A springtime bounce in the garden of musical delights.

Our final program opens with Schubert’s Arpeggione sonata, a late work of supreme tenderness and harmonic subtlety. We skip to the refreshingly tonic (and definitely hazardous!) Hasards by Florent Schmitt, one of France’s more fascinating and lesser known composers. Our final hop takes us to the towering Piano Quintet of Xaver Scharwenka, the German-Polish virtuoso/composer whose works are finally receiving deserved acclaim after a century’s neglect.

Franz Schubert Arpeggione Sonata
